Lifetime Learners
As UN Day approached once again -- amidst war in Iraq, tyranny in Burma, and genocide in Africa -- the topic for our Lunch and Learn was appropriately: "UN Day: Why Should We Celebrate It?"
For 60 years, United Nations Day has been celebrated around the world on Oct. 24, the anniversary of the UN Charter when fifty-one countries joined together to ensure that tragedies such as the Holocaust never happen again. Its mission was to be vigilant against tyranny in all forms and to open the world's eyes to the possibility of world peace.
Speakers were members of the NCC chapter of the United Nations Association (UNA), including Aye Aye Thant, daughter of the third UN Secretary-General, U Thant; and Willard (Bill) Hass, who served the UN for over thirty years with the Department of Public Information.
