U.S. Elections Process

On "Super Tuesday", February 5, IVC-CT hosted six Estonian members of the Estonian Reform Party (including the Secretary General and the Prime Minister's top advisor) to acquaint them with the American political process, focusing on campaigns and registration processes. The program found exceptional hosts in Rudy Marconi, mayor of Ridgefield, and other Ridgefield government and political leaders. The meetings covered everything from a tour of the new voting machines to how Republicans and Democrats campaign against each other and then work together in a small town.

Advocacy

In conjunction with other organizations and affiliates, IHC-FC works to make public and elected officials aware of global issues important to the Chapter, including the UN Millennium Development Goals.

* The project of the UNA this year isĀ  Help Educate at Risk Orphans, which seeks to help the children of people with AIDS.

* Each year the chapter works to eliminate land mines by raising money for Adopt-a-Minefield held on Nov. 4, the Night of 1000 Dinners.
* Peace initiatives are constantly undertaken. Member Pauline Cantwell, Peace Action representative at the UN, keeps the Committee posted on local and international peace initiatives.
* A Women of Distinction in Connecticut award ceremony was held in 2003, honoring 140 women who have made a difference. IHC-FC collected nominations and biographies, planned the ceremony, and arranged for publication. This award was the brainchild of Ruth Steinkraus-Cohen, who felt that women who dedicated themselves to peace, justice and development through voluntary work should be recognized for their efforts. Previous award presentations were in 1967 and 1987.
